30 trips around the sun

better late than never, huh?

It was my birthday 3 weeks ago, and it was such a beautiful day, I really want to document it here :)

I had an “Open House Open Invitation” for Cupcakes and Champagne at home. I ordered a variety of cupcakes from The Cupcake Lady, and I made a divine choc peanut cheesecake . I had little mini quiches, a selection of teas and coffee and juice for those who didn’t want champagne.

I spent the week prior to my birthday making some bunting in free moments between work. I also made pretty little flags for the cupcakes and food. On the morning, I strung the bunting, set up the tables and decorated with lots of pink roses and gerbera daisies. It really looked lovely.

We stay in a complex, and our house is not the biggest, but it looked perfect :)

Things I learnt from my birthday:

  1. - If the invite says “pop in for a cupcake anytime between 1 and 5pm” – most people will arrive at about 1:30 and stay until 5pm!
  2. - This means there will not be enough chairs for 25-odd people!
  3. - A townhouse garden literally bulges at the seams with that number of people.
  4. - Despite the tight fit, everyone will have a great time if there is enough food and drink and sunshine.
  5. - People will travel far and wide :) I had guests from Pretoria, the south of JHB, Ruimsig area, the East Rand… all trekked to my little house in Midrand.
  6. - The beagles will eat cupcake papers.
  7. - People make themselves at home – which I loved!
  8. - My dad enjoys chatting to “the young people”
  9. - My mom was in awe listening to the young ladies discussing boob jobs! haha!
  10. - Kids will entertain themselves if they have other kids, grass and friendly dogs.
  11. - The people who REALLY matter will make an effort to be there!
  12. - People who cancel at the last minute with lame excuses can bite my (old, wrinkly) ass!

I had a beautiful day, and was immensely spoilt…Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who came through to make my 30th birthday so special.

AAAAAAND I got the most awesome present from my lovely husband (hehe – still sound like a chop calling him that!) …

Something I have wanted for as LONG as I can remember!!

so, I got to tick TWO items off my bucket list in one day!

Number 7. Have a party with champagne and cupcakes. With loads of beautiful flowers.

Number 15. Learn to sew. I’ve always always wanted a sewing machine. … well, now I need to LEARN to sew! lol!

Weird Head Space

Who thought I would ever be writing *this* blogpost.

You know what has been on my mind for most of my waking hours over the last month or so? Kids. Babies. Offspring.

No, I don’t one.

Ever since I was old enough to realise a baby is not a pretty doll, I have never really wanted kids. I went through a stage where i was REALLY against having kids at all… and then i warmed up slightly thinking it wouldn’t be the worst thing ever. Then I didn’t want them, then it wouldn’t be so bad etc etc. I thought that by the time I was old enough, and married, I would have it figured out. One way or another. I thought my biological clock would have kicked in.

And now I’m old. well, I’m 30. and I’m married. And I don’t have it figured out. My clock is not ticking.

I like to sleep late. I like to not get up in the night. I like not having to clean wee, poo and puke. I like never having to wipe snot away. I like being able to spend what little money I have on myself. I like not having to visit doctors. I like not having to share my chocolate. I like not having toys all over my house (well, there are some dog toys). I like that I can totally skip that one aisle in the supermarket. I like not having children.

So why the “dilemma” … well, basically, I am really worried that in 10 years time I am going to regret not having kids.

You know the saying “In 20 years time you will regret the things you didn’t do more than those you did”.

Of course, I probably won’t regret having kids. No one does. Or at least, no one says they do. Coz it’s not socially acceptable to talk about stuff like that. Well, that, and people probably don’t really regret having the little wee/snot/poo machines.

Then, some days I think it could be quite cool having a kid or two. It would make us feel  more like a proper family unit. Not just two people, you know? Like, being married hasn’t changed our relationship at all. I was talking to Peter about it the other day and I asked him if he thought of me as his family. And he asked me the same question. And while I do think of him as my absolute everything… When I think of “My Family” I see my mom, dad, brother and sisters and my 5 nephews. And in the background I see my aunt and a few cousins. I don’t immediately think of Peter as my FAMILY – does that make sense? I want to though – and the thought of having a kid makes me feel like that will make us a family.

Not to mention the general social pressure.

I think it would be quite fun to do all the fun stuff I see the Twitter Mommies doing with their kids – going to ballet practice, baking fairy cupcakes, swimming lessons, going to a scratch patch. Planning fairy or dragon birthday parties. Being the supportive parent who is so proud of the finger painting, or whatever.

But I just don’t know if I’m cut out for that. And I guess there is only one way to find out. But I don’t know if I want to find out. I don’t think I do. But I don’t want regret.

I wish this was easier and more clear cut. I wish I didn’t think about this all the time. The thought actually gives me heart palpitations. In a OMG I’m terrified kinda way.

*EDIT* I should also have mentioned that when I was born, my parents were 38 and 42… my siblings were 12, 16 and 18 years old. My parents have always been “old” and I was raised as an only child. Because of this, I know what it is like having old parents. I am not a huge fan. Yes, there are pro’s to it … but in all honesty, I think there are more con’s especially for the child. I also don’t think being an only child is a good thing (sorry Alida :p ) and I wouldn’t want to have just one child. I don’t think it’s fair on the kid. Which brings me to the point that, having 2 kids would ideally take 3-5 years… which if i got going NOW would take me to 34/35 years old when the 2nd one would be born… which is pretty old. imo**

Day 14 (Movement), 15 (Technology), 16 (Animals), 17 (Memories)

These photos have been on my camera/phone for a while… pretty swamped with work at the moment!

Right -

Day 14 – Movement:

Oscar loves running around at Walkhaven Dog Park, and my little “mik-en-druk” just can’t keep up with him :)

Day 15 – Technology:

I swear there are more remotes in this house than any other home in the world! (and yes, we have tried the one remote to rule them all thing – it didn’t do the job :p )

Day 16 – Animals:

I love being at the stables… here are a few of the many ponies :)

Jewel, Gully, Clue and Mare

Day 17 – Memories

One of our beagle friends went to the beagle heaven in the sky this week :( Memories of Rebel will remain with us

hello 2012

So, I don’t make resolutions very often, because I generally don’t stick to them. Hell, I can’t even do a 30 day photo challenge!
I made a list of resolutions in 2010 and listed my progress – which was quite the fail :p

This year, I have a few goals, very few I might add!! :p here they are:

HEALTH RELATED:
- I want to walk/jog at least once a week.
- Get back on track with eating and lose the Festive Season bulge by the end of Feb.

HORSE RELATED:
- I want to take Twister on an outride.
- Canter bareback and be comfortable and confident doing it.

PERSONAL:
- Work towards having a white Christmas in the next year or two or three. (item on my Bucketlist)
- Buy a sewing machine and make 2 things that aren’t total disasters!… even if it is just a tablecloth and a set of napkins! (also on my Bucketlist)
- Have a haircut at least every 2 months.

that’s all I can think of for now… I may add things as I think of them.

Day 12 – Hands and Day 13 – Written Words

I’m going to ignore the fact that this photo thing is a total fail :p

Day 12 is Hands…
when we lie in bed and read, I almost always either grab Peter’s hand, or tickle his arm.

Day 13 is Written Words…
We took a trip on the Gautrain to Hatfield for lunch at Duncan Yard last week. We ate at Deli on Duncan, which is just divine! The food looks gorgeous and tastes amazing… and their cordials are so delish! I had passionfruit and vanilla… which is sweet nectar of the gods… seriously, go there! It’s a block from the Hatfield station, so really no excuse not to try it :)

Anyway… I spotted this sign at the deli, and couldn’t resist a pic for the challenge. I think Alida will relate :)

If i finish this challenge in 2012 I will consider it a success! :p

Bling a ling

sooooooooo… Angel awarded me this blog bling a little while ago! woot :D

the deal, as usual, tell you guys 7 things about myself that I haven’t posted before and should be new to you… and then award it to a bunch of bloggers.

This 7 things about me thing is getting harder as the years go by… so, let me do a themed one… if you will indulge me to ramble about the wedding a little more, here are 7 things about our wedding that you didn’t know:

1 – The flower/decor people were meant to make the parents’ corsages with gerbera daisies, but used roses instead. I didn’t even notice until Michelle pointed it out.
2 – The marriage officer lost our wedding vows I had emailed him, and was going to just make us say some random stuff… luckily I double checked with him a few days before.
3 – The very first time I saw any of my family on my wedding day was when I arrived at the chapel (my dad outside, and the rest of my family I only saw/spoke to after the ceremony).
4 – I had a french pedicure, even though I wore closed shoes… but I really wish I had had hot pink polish on my toes.
5 – Peter left his belt and socks at home. He borrowed his best man’s extra socks, and didn’t wear a belt.
6 – The chestnut ponies who pulled the carriage are called Sugar and Ramble.
7 – “Something Old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue” … I didn’t have something old. Most stuff was new. I borrowed the hoop under my dress from my dressmaker. There was a blue ribbon on my garter – which was a last minute gift from the best man’s wife.

Passing this blog award on… I’m not going to award specific people, as these things go around… so if you would like to do this, please do, and let me know where to find your post :)

All about 2011

Read 2009 and 2010.

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?

Um, I guess getting married would be the obvious choice. I also missed a flight for the first time. And went to Mauritius. And ate lobster.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions and will you make more for next year?

I don’t think I made any NYR last year… other than wanting my business to do better than it did the previous year – which it has.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Not that I can think of, no…

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Peter’s gran died.

5. What countries did you visit?

Mauritius!

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

Financial peace of mind. and some form of age appropriate fashion sense

7. What date, from 2011, will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

9/10/11. Kinda got married.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Sorry for all the wedding related stuff, but it was a big deal. The biggest achievement was pulling off a full on proper wedding. pretty much all by myself.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Hmmm, looking back at last year’s list I see I wanted to have more patience this year than I had last year… this was pretty much an epic fail.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Ja, I had flu twice, maybe even three times. I also got sunburnt :p

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Oh I love my wedding dress!! love love love it!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Again, Peter. He kept me calm(ish) and focused with all the crazy wedding stress when i was freaking out. And Peter’s friends from Wales who came over for the wedding – I can now call them my friends too – Ros was a lifesaver – literally!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

No surprises here… the same person as last year, amazingly.

Also, my mom really really really hurt my feelings with her whole disinterest in the wedding thing.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Do I have to mention the “W” word again!?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

again, the “W” word!! and going to Mauritius on Honeymoon. And doing my first show with Twister. And my Trash the Dress shoot!

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?

Secondhand Serenade – Your Call. Not because it was released now or anything tho. And Weezer’s Island in the Sun (see here for more info)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder? According to last year’s list, I was sad… so I must be happier!! :D
Thinner or fatter? probably the same.
Richer or poorer? Poorer I guess

(last year i was thin, poor and sad. This year I am thin, poor and happy)

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Would it be a cop-out to say SWIM – for the 3rd year in a row? If so, then, I wish I had slept more! and drank more champagne!

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Stressed. Cried.

At my brother’s house.

Yes! With Twister!

No (still the same people as last year – hehe!)

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Loved it!!!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Simple Plan’s new album is awesome, not that miserable teenage angsty stuff they used to do!

Love, Peace, Acceptance and Support from family.

32.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
See point number 29.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?

Clueless and probably inappropriate for an almost 30 year old married woman. anyone wanna make-me-over?

34. What kept you sane?
Rescue Remedy, Hairdye and Myprodols. And the peace being at the stables brings

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I am useless at these questions. Um, how about McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy.

36. Who did you miss?

No one really. I am sad that I don’t have a sister to share things with. But I never had that, so I can’t miss it, right?

37. Who was the best new person you met?

I really really enjoyed meeting Cat and Alida. I so appreciate their online moral support :)

Best new animal I met was definitely Twister <3

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.

it all works out in the end.

39. Quote that sums up your year.

“It’s my wedding, shut up and do what I say”

Day 11 – Something Old

Ugh, this challenge has been an epic fail!

Something Old… I knew what I wanted to photograph… problem is, it’s at my mom’s house, and every single time I go there, I have forgotten. I don’t really have anything old at home… I guess “old” is a relative term though. So today, I walked around my house, phone in hand, determined to find the oldest thing in the house… and this is the best I could come up with:

My (once very prized) CD collection… on top of the very dusty bookshelf.

Speaking of struggling to find something old… that was the only thing I was missing on my wedding day with the whole “Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue”.

Kitchen Wall

When we moved into this townhouse 2 years ago, our plan was to knock down the wall that divides the kitchen and the scullery area. The kitchen is pretty dark, as the only window in the room is in the scullery, behind the wall. On an overcast day, you need to switch the light on.

The cupboards are a medium to dark finish and tiles in the house are also a medium colour (my choice would be light light tiles and cupboards).

Anyway, so knocking down the wall isn;t going to happen anymore… and the wall is just such a waste of space. We have really high ceilings, and the wall irritates me. it is 3m high (from floor to ceiling) and about 2m across. It is tiled, and has the light switch slap bang in the middle of the wall.

I think I want to paint the wall. Paint over the tiles. Apparently this is possible.

I want to paint it. white. bright white white. So lighten up the dark kitchen. I would like to do something else on the wall, so it isn’t just a big white white hospital wall. But I also don;t want to go crazy as the kitchen is quite small and obviously more detail will defeat the whole object of trying to lighten and brighten the room…

this is a pic of the wall as it is now:

ugly hey…?

I saw something on Pinterest the other day and was inspired…

this is what I saw:

the inspirational piece is the little blackboard week planner thingy… i love it!

Now, making that shelf frame thingy is just never ever gonna happen… so I thought what if I block off tiles and make little blackboard days straight on the wall with that magical blackboard paint…?

my (very rough created in 5 minutes in photoshop) vision:

what do you think? Do you have any other ideas to make that damn wall interesting and useful, but not crazy busy?

So, what’s happening?

With this photo meme thing going on, I haven;t really blogged in like forever. Which is probably a good thing. I’m not feeling it.

Life – I’m doing it wrong.

I’m in such a slump at the moment. Work is really really quiet. Which, in a way is good because it is almost year end and time to “shut down” and taking on new projects in December always makes me nervous about tight deadlines. BUT not having much work to do means not much income. And after the last few months, well, my finances are completely depleted. And it’s Christmas time. Which means eating out, dinner parties, presents etc… which are all very hard to do it you don’t have an income. *sigh*

All finance problems aside, I think there is more to this feeling than money alone. Just not quite sure what to do about it. Where to go from here.

But let’s not talk about that stuff.

I’ve been trying to keep my mind off it and keep busy.

  • – I’ve made loose menu plan type things, and been trying to come up with creative healthy lunches. Sheesh, I can NOT believe this is the highlight of my life right now. How lame is that.

  • - I spent a lot of time at the end of November making up a special present for Peter. I found it on Cat’s blog (she makes it for her kids) and I was really really excited to make it. It’s an advent calendar… with all sorts of different items inside… chocolates, little toys, activites for certain days… typing it out sounds a bit silly tho :p

when December is over, I’ll post some pics of the inside of it… it was pretty fun to do (although bloody difficult to think of 24 *small* goodies to put inside, as I didn;t want them all to be chocolates/sweets.).

Hmm, what else…?

  • - Next week I have a TTD shoot booked (part of the wedding photography package) … we’ll be doing it at the stables with all the horses… This was the one thing that got me through all the wedding stress, I’ve been looking forward to this since forever. It was one of the main reasons i had a dress MADE and didn’t rent one.

  • - Harry is just the most adorable creature in the world. I really do love him so!

  • - My latest favourite song is “All my Friends are Insects” by Weezer. (youtube here) It’s such a cute friendly little song.

  • - My riding has taken a bit of a back seat lately… I didn’t ride for about a month before the wedding, and then i was on honeymoon… and it just seems a bit silly to ride properly now, with december holidays coming up… so, I have been riding, just not with terribly much purpose or ambition… maybe that’s why i’m in a slump?

  • - Peter says I need to redo my Snapping Turtle website. I love my website, I think it’s so cool, with the Pantone chart menu :p but ja, I guess it is time for a revamp/rebrand. I hate doing stuff for myself tho!

  • - It feels like the only time I get out is to go to pilates/riding or dinner at my mom every Monday night. And grocery shopping – joy. Getting a bit of cabin fever

  • - We put up the Christmas tree and i made a wreath for our front door this past weekend.

I think that’s it. What a random post of rather miserable points. sorry about that. I’m going to raid the cupboard for chocolate.
